There are many speculations as to when drag racing began; some say drag racing began during prohibition where sellers of illegal alcohol would attempt to outrun the authorities by modifying their cars with bigger and more highly tuned engines that were hidden under the hoods of their cars. Others theorize that drag racing grew directly from illegal match racing that took place on rural roads by the young generation of the postwar 1940’s to early 1950’s; rebuilding and modifying their cars to settle the “mine is faster than yours” argument. Into the 1950’s and continuing on today, drag racing has been taking place on legal more safe drag racing strips across the country to settle the debate between racers in fair competition.
I created a brand experience that was influenced by drag racing for a car clubs brand identity, initiation apparel, and racing merchandise. This experience targeted the young generation of enthusiasts and novice alike. The aesthetic direction for this experience was primarily influenced by pre-1970 automobile design and a revival of modernist ideals.
